I've finally formally started schooling Noah. Its been kind of hit or miss with him, but now I have specific things we do each day. He is very excited to sit and do things with me one on one. On Tues, he did very well and would have gone on longer if I let him. He had Wed off while he went to play with his cousin. Today we did a bit, but between his cold and lack of sleep, I called it quits when he just wouldn't cooperate. At any rate, here's what we've been doing:
*We've been practicing writing his name. He is much better at this than I thought he would be. I'm making sure he starts forming his letters from the top down because I'm having problems with that with Andrew now.
*We do alphabet flashcards and he tells me the letter and sound. I'd say he knows all of his letters except a couple like Q, X, and Z. He knows maybe half the sounds.
*Click n kids-a phonics based reading program we used with Andrew also.
Edit: I forgot to mention the book he is most excited about. Its called "Before the Code" and its supposed to be done before the Explode the Code books. He's really excited to finally have his own workbook, just like Andrew!
Next week I will start doing more with counting.

A, M, S
Those are the 3 sounds Noah knows quite well. He's usually quite excited to do school, but his attention wanes rapidly. He also worked with pattern blocks yesterday. If I put the right pieces in front of him, he could fill the pattern in quite well.

On Wed we did some more with the 'a' sound. His favorite activity is laying out the letter cards and driving his car over them as he makes the 'a' sound. We also used the linking cubes to sort by different colors. I thought he had mastered the color red but when I asked him at the end of the lesson, he still didn't know what color the red cube was! I think he'll get it eventually. :-) We also counted cubes up to the number 5. Seems to know that pretty well. He can also recognize random letters that he sees places. He wanted to try write his name, but his finger dexterity is still lacking a bit. :-) I'm pretty excited to be teaching both of them to learn at the same time. They seem to feed off each others energy and since right now they are both positive, that's a good thing. :-)

11.22.10
Today I started using the True North reading materials with Noah. He loved it! I don't know if it was the one-on-one time with mom or the fact that he got to use some new "toys." But he definitely knows what sound the 'a' makes.
I have been trying to work a bit on colors with him, but he really doesn't get it. I never taught colors to Andrew, he just picked it up so I'm not going to try real hard with Noah. I think that is one of those things that will just come and it seems like a waste of time to try and teach it.
So we will concentrate on the 'a' sound using the materials I have and next week will move to the 's' sound.

Noah!
He is starting to learn some sounds of letters. He was eating some letter pretzels the other day and he told me that the B says buh and the F says fff. I was very impressed! Didn't realize that was sinking in. We are doing preschool with a couple of his cousins one morning a week. They read stories, learn a letter, and do a craft.
I have also been playing a color matching game with Noah and Andrew to help Noah learn his colors. He hasn't caught on yet. Sometimes he knows the right color but more often he has no clue.
I've also noticed this week that his temperament has been a lot better. He was pitching fits about things a lot and crying but I've noticed the last few days that he has become much more accepting when mommy says no or says later. He can also be a big helper when he wants to be. :-)
